5 Basic Steps for creating a brand for your band
Are you and independent band or artist just launching your first social media pages or website and don’t know what to write in the band biography section?
Well here are some tips and tricks about how you can build a brand for your band!

1. Who are you?
Write a biography about yourself and tell your audience who you are!
Your biography should be approximately 5 paragraphs long and include the following:
And please make it more special than: “Well I know John since forever so we decided to create a band!”
Write a story of how you met and developed, be creative and funny about it. People like amazing stories and biographies that stand out are usually even better for future engagements with record labels, PR agencies etc.
2. What type of music is it?
Before you start you should be sure about which kind of music do you play. I have met many bands that couldn’t even categories themselves – so how should your audience know if you can’t.
You can go a bit mad in your categories, but make sure to have at least one or two main categories such as folk, rock, punk etc in there so you can easily be found if you are looked for.
It also helps the social media algorithm to target the audiences’ interests better in terms of promoted posts for example.
3. What is special about you?
Nobody wants another Justin Bieber, that is for sure. But a lot of bands are going with trends that are currently in the charts but somehow don’t differentiate themselves from them. If you can’t differentiate then your band will just blend in and probably suffocate with all the other more successful bands out there.
Make sure you have something special about your band or music and promote it as well.
4. Who is your audience?
You should know who you want to reach with your music and who your audience is.
· Are you a teen band that wants to reach mostly young people in the age of 13-20?
· Or are you targeting an older audience?
· Do you know where your audience resides?
A lot of artist made it for example in Germany even though they originated from Ireland.
Example: Rea Garvey, – Irish artist – Really big in Germany
You can easily see now through Facebook analytics where your audience comes from, what age group is the most engage and even what gender. Check it from time to time and engage with the ones that you reach the most.
Keep an eye out at gigs or festivals and see who has come to watch you! Or even go out to the crowd afterwards and get to know some of them?
Check the media - Who has blogged about you? Where have you been featured in an article? Who are they targeting?
4. What image do you want to portray as a band?
Good photographs of you or your band are essential to every online presence!
You don't want to look like them lads!

You may invest in a professional photographer in order to have great pictures that you can put on your website, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud etc.
Being consistent across all channels is very important too.
You can also motivate your audience to share photos from a gig through #Hashtags or through Instagram, onto your Social Media!
